History

Indigenous Foundations

Before European contact, California was home to over 70 Indigenous nations, including the Chumash, Miwok, Pomo, and Tongva peoples — each with distinct languages, traditions, and territories.

Spanish & Mexican Eras

Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, establishing missions, presidios, and settlements along the coast. California became part of Mexico after 1821, and then the United States following the Mexican–American War and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (1848).

The Gold Rush

In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill — and boom! — the world came rushing in. The California Gold Rush transformed the region overnight, accelerating statehood, urbanization, and, occasionally, chaos.
