The Korean Language Comprehensive Grammar Guide ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ท

Quick Snapshot

  • Language Family: Koreanic
  • Alphabet: Hangul (ํ•œ๊ธ€)
  • Word Order: Subjectโ€“Objectโ€“Verb (SOV)
  • Honorific System: Yes โ€” very much so
  • Politeness Levels: Multiple (depending on formality)
  • Writing System: Phonetic, invented in the 15th century by King Sejong the Great

Korean grammar is logical, elegant, and famously polite. Itโ€™s a language that builds entire sentences like Lego blocks โ€” each piece fitting perfectly, provided you put the verb last.

๐Ÿงฑ Sentence Structure

Word Order

Korean uses Subjectโ€“Objectโ€“Verb (SOV) order.

EnglishKoreanLiteral Order
I eat an apple.๋‚˜๋Š” ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋ฅผ ๋จน์–ด์š”.I + apple + eat

The verb always comes last โ€” the sentenceโ€™s anchor.

๐Ÿ”  Particles (์กฐ์‚ฌ)

Particles are small words attached to nouns that define their grammatical role.

FunctionParticle(s)ExampleMeaning
Subject์ด / ๊ฐ€๋‚ด๊ฐ€, ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๊ฐ€I / the apple (subject)
Topic์€ / ๋Š”๋‚˜๋Š”, ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋Š”As for me / as for the apple
Object์„ / ๋ฅผ์‚ฌ๊ณผ๋ฅผapple (object)
Possessive์˜๋‚˜์˜ ์ฑ…my book
Location (at/in)์—ํ•™๊ต์— ๊ฐ€์š”I go to school
Location (at/from)์—์„œ์ง‘์—์„œ ๊ณต๋ถ€ํ•ด์š”I study at home
Also / too๋„๋‚˜๋„me too
And (with)์™€ / ๊ณผ / ํ•˜๊ณ ์นœ๊ตฌ์™€with a friend
From์—์„œ / ๋ถ€ํ„ฐ์„œ์šธ์—์„œfrom Seoul
To / Until์— / ๊นŒ์ง€์ง‘๊นŒ์ง€to home

Think of particles as post-positions โ€” they do the job that English prepositions do, but after the noun.

๐Ÿ™‹ Pronouns (๋Œ€๋ช…์‚ฌ)

EnglishKorean (Hangul)Romanization
I / Me๋‚˜ (informal), ์ € (formal)na, jeo
You๋„ˆ (informal), ๋‹น์‹  (formal, rarely used)neo, dangsin
He๊ทธgeu
She๊ทธ๋…€geu-nyeo
We์šฐ๋ฆฌ (informal), ์ €ํฌ (formal)uri, jeo-hui
They๊ทธ๋“คgeu-deul
It๊ทธ๊ฒƒgeu-geot

Politeness tip: Avoid ๋„ˆ with strangers โ€” use names + titles instead.

๐Ÿงฉ Verb Basics

Verbs always end the sentence and conjugate for:

  • Tense
  • Politeness level
  • Formality

They do not change for subject gender or number.
(A relief after French.)

Verb Stem

Take the infinitive (dictionary form, ending in ๋‹ค) and remove ๋‹ค.

Dictionary FormStemMeaning
๊ฐ€๋‹ค๊ฐ€to go
๋จน๋‹ค๋จนto eat
ํ•˜๋‹คํ•˜to do
์žˆ๋‹ค์žˆto exist / have
์‚ด๋‹ค์‚ดto live

๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ Tenses

Present (ํ˜„์žฌ)

VerbStemEndingExampleMeaning
๊ฐ€๋‹ค๊ฐ€-์•„์š” / -์–ด์š”๊ฐ€์š”I go
๋จน๋‹ค๋จน-์–ด์š”๋จน์–ด์š”I eat
ํ•˜๋‹คํ•˜-ํ•ด์š”ํ•ด์š”I do

Rule of thumb:

  • If stem ends in ใ… or ใ…—, use -์•„์š”
  • Otherwise, use -์–ด์š”
  • If verb ends in ํ•˜๋‹ค, use -ํ•ด์š”

Past (๊ณผ๊ฑฐ)

Add -์•˜์–ด์š” / -์—ˆ์–ด์š” / -ํ–ˆ์–ด์š”

VerbExampleMeaning
๊ฐ€๋‹ค๊ฐ”์–ด์š”I went
๋จน๋‹ค๋จน์—ˆ์–ด์š”I ate
ํ•˜๋‹คํ–ˆ์–ด์š”I did

Future (๋ฏธ๋ž˜)

Add -ใ„น ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” / -์„ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”

VerbExampleMeaning
๊ฐ€๋‹ค๊ฐˆ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”I will go
๋จน๋‹ค๋จน์„ ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”I will eat
ํ•˜๋‹คํ•  ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š”I will do

ใ„น ๊ฑฐ์˜ˆ์š” literally means โ€œwill (be going to)โ€ โ€” an intention or prediction.

๐Ÿง  Formality Levels

Korean has several speech levels that reflect politeness and social hierarchy.

LevelEndingExampleUsage
Formal polite-ใ…‚๋‹ˆ๋‹ค / -์Šต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค๊ฐ‘๋‹ˆ๋‹คNews, formal speech
Polite-์•„์š” / -์–ด์š”๊ฐ€์š”Everyday conversation
Casual / informal-์•„ / -์–ด๊ฐ€Friends, family
Very formal-ํ•˜์˜ต๋‹ˆ๋‹ค(rare)Historical, royal speech

Always default to -์š” forms with strangers โ€” polite, friendly, and safe.

๐Ÿ™Œ Copula Verbs

โ€œTo beโ€ (์ด๋‹ค)

EnglishKoreanExample
am / is / are์ด์—์š” / ์˜ˆ์š”์ €๋Š” ํ•™์ƒ์ด์—์š” โ†’ I am a student

Rule:

  • Ends with consonant โ†’ ์ด์—์š”
  • Ends with vowel โ†’ ์˜ˆ์š”

โ€œTo not beโ€ (์•„๋‹ˆ๋‹ค)

EnglishKoreanExample
not / isnโ€™t์•„๋‹ˆ์—์š”ํ•™์ƒ์ด ์•„๋‹ˆ์—์š” โ€” Iโ€™m not a student

๐Ÿ’ฌ Questions

Add ? or rising intonation โ€” or use ๋‚˜์š” / ๊นŒ์š” endings for formality.

EnglishKorean
Are you okay?๊ดœ์ฐฎ์•„์š”?
What is it?๋ญ์˜ˆ์š”?
Where are you going?์–ด๋”” ๊ฐ€์š”?
When is it?์–ธ์ œ์˜ˆ์š”?
Who is it?๋ˆ„๊ตฌ์˜ˆ์š”?

๐Ÿ™… Negation

Two common ways to negate:

  1. ์•ˆ + verb

    • ์•ˆ ๊ฐ€์š” โ€” Iโ€™m not going
    • ์•ˆ ๋จน์–ด์š” โ€” I donโ€™t eat
  2. verb stem + ์ง€ ์•Š์•„์š”

    • ๊ฐ€์ง€ ์•Š์•„์š” โ€” (more formal) I do not go
    • ๋จน์ง€ ์•Š์•„์š” โ€” I donโ€™t eat

๐Ÿงฉ Particles Refresher

UseParticleExample
Subject์ด / ๊ฐ€ํ•™์ƒ์ด ์™”์–ด์š”. โ€” The student came.
Topic์€ / ๋Š”์ €๋Š” ํ•™์ƒ์ด์—์š”. โ€” As for me, Iโ€™m a student.

With์™€ / ๊ณผ / ํ•˜๊ณ ์นœ๊ตฌํ•˜๊ณ  ๊ฐ”์–ด์š”. โ€” I went with a friend.

๐Ÿ“š Adjectives (ํ˜•์šฉ์‚ฌ)

In Korean, adjectives behave like verbs โ€” they conjugate!

DictionaryPresentMeaning
ํฌ๋‹ค์ปค์š”big
์ž‘๋‹ค์ž‘์•„์š”small
์˜ˆ์˜๋‹ค์˜ˆ๋ป์š”pretty
๋งŽ๋‹ค๋งŽ์•„์š”many
์ข‹๋‹ค์ข‹์•„์š”good
๋‚˜์˜๋‹ค๋‚˜๋น ์š”bad
๋ฅ๋‹ค๋”์›Œ์š”hot
์ถฅ๋‹ค์ถ”์›Œ์š”cold

You donโ€™t say โ€œis prettyโ€ โ€” ์˜ˆ๋ป์š” already means โ€œis pretty.โ€
